Adocu’s debut

As you may have already found out, adocu was released early this morning. We still have 7 more hours until the day is over and we are already looking at a very successful debut with over 201 registrations as of right now(and still growing). Adocu couldn’t have made it this far without all your great blog posts and referrals. We really appreciate them and we would like to pass a little recognition:

Twitter too big for you? Try one-word-wonder Adocu

Adocu.com - Starting the Nano Blogging Revolution

Adocu: micro-blog site (Nano-Blogging?) (chinese)

Is my blog too long?

adocu

Adocu - What’s your status?

Anyone use Adocu?

(if you write a post about adocu please email me and I will add it [email at bottom])

We are also aware of some problems with the site.

  • The profile thumbnails - fixed, simple error on my part.
  • Different languages - fixed
  • It should only show a number of your friends, not all of them - fixed
  • More networking and status - ideas?
  • SMS/email updating - sms costs a lot to obtain a number(maybe if enough people use adocu), but we should be adding email updating soon
  • any more? just let me know

Some questions:

  • why doesn’t my language work?!?! - it’s an encoding problem and we’re working on it.
  • is this a joke? no its not a joke, its just a different, fun and free application for anyone to use that keeps you connected with your current friends and the ones you will make by letting them know what your up to.

We really want to keep this fun, simple and friendly. We appreciate any suggestions, comments or questions. Remember we’re still working out the kinks and adding features.

So what’s your status? keep us updated!

I actually can’t seem to get my profile picture to change. I tried uploading three times with two different files. The service itself looks interesting, though. API to come, right? :-)

  2. 2 admin

Thanks for commenting! Thats very odd that you can’t get the picture changed. If you check the users under adocu.com/jonathan you can see that it’s working for a lot of people. Have you tried it lately? the server might of been under too much load.

And yes, we are planning on an API,RSS and a few other things soon. Watch my status to find out when we add new features or change something.

    Thanks again!,
    Jonathan

in Brazil is a bad name, ’cause is a little kidding ¬¬

  5. 5 Tiffany

Can’t get picture to load either? Only 23kb.

a temporary work-around for the prohibitive cost of an sms shortcode might be to set up some kind of e-mail gateway, like what iwantsandy.com does, with a unique (and un-guessable) e-mail address for each user, that people could use to post via email or sms-to-email!

@everyone Anyone having picture problems please email the picture to jonathan[at]adocu.com so I can fix it.

@alii I feel your pain!!! we are working on moving the server so I can get the support for other languages installed. Please bear with us. I will post a message once it’s fixed.

@myrrh great idea!, once the new server is up I will add an email server for it. I was thinking that users could send all posts to me[at]adocu.com using the email set up in their account(and they could add more) and it would recognize who it’s coming from and which user that is.

@bruna I don’t know what to say, it’s a little late :) our original name was going to be adocoo which we also own.

Sorry it took a little while to approve and reply to these comments. I got locked out of wordpress and my email provider auto-deletes them.

    Thank alot and keep adocuing!

Great idea… blogged about it here:

    http://www.thoughtstoblog.com/articles/2008/05/29/adocu

Just added a few suggestions but keep it simple! :)

Any thing you can share about the technology behind it?

  9. 9 Angela

This looks fun! Have you thought about adding the ability to update your status to the settings/home page?

  10. 10 Matías

    How do you add friends?

  11. 11 Matt

I seriously think this project needs to enable spaces. Otherwise it isn’t going to last that long. :(

  12. 12 admin

@matias Well, when you go to someone’s profile who’s not your friend you should see a little icon next to the word “Friends”. But someone told me there might be a bug there so I’m going to check it out.

@matt but how would that separate us from the rest.

  13. 13 admin

@angela that’s definitely a great idea, we will have to think about it.

@jake behind what part of it?

  14. 14 Matías

@admin Thank you very much! :D.

  15. 15 Matías

By the way, a few comments.

I see you addresing at the people with @…
But that’s something twitter like. In this system you can’t address to someone, because if you do you use your word :P, so you couldn’t post.
Also, there isn’t a Public Timeline where you can see what your friends “adocu”ed…

And if you are already a registered user and you’re logged, the page adocu.com shows you the options off login and join. It would be nice that if you are logged it showed you your personal homepage.

    :).

  16. 16 admin

@matias, yes I guess thats twitter like. If we add direct messaging using @ we could easily make it work with the current guidelines, just some small changes to the code. We have been thinking of adding some form of direct messaging.

Yes, there is a public timeline. Look in the bottom center of every page and there will be a link to http://adocu.com/public_feed.rss

We also have timelines for each individual user and each users buddies.

I like the idea of making the homepage your personal page once you login.

Feel free to post more questions or comments.

    Thank you,
    Jonathan

  17. 17 Matías

Not only a Direct Messasing form, but also a reply thing would be nice.

Yes, I saw the public timeline, sorry, I was referring to something like a buddy timeline… and I just saw it :P. But personally I don’t like the idea of it being with rss… I would prefer something with the template of the site.

    Nice work :).

  18. 18 Matías

I feel like a spammer, sorry hahaha.

    A few more things…

-When you do an adocu (did already someone set a name for the action of making a post in adocu, and what is called that post? :P) with an special character (like an accent, in the Spanish language: á-é-í-ó-ú), it doesn’t works.

-If you try to refresh your page when you just sent and “adocu”, it will ask you to confirm if you want to send that information again (I think because the post method it’s used, instead of get, or something like that).

-I can’t see correctly the rss… in example, in your rss I see just the “finished-adocu” line… and in my buddy’s RSS I can’t see anything.

-If I enter your homepage, I cannot see the link to your friends rss. But I can access to it by just entering the url http://adocu.com/friends/jonathan :P. I don’t know why isn’t the link in your homepage, if I can see it anyway.

  19. 19 admin

@matias I agree with what your saying completely. We just wanted to put up RSS feeds first because a lot of people where asking for them.

    Thanks again,
    Jonathan

  20. 20 admin

Guess I answered the last one a little slow :) you beat me with another one.

The different characters not working is a known problem described in this blog entry, we are just waiting for the new dedicated server to be up and running before we can fix it.

I will fix the double posting thing soon, all it needs is a redirect to remove the form submission.

The only reason we don’t show the buddy RSS is because we didn’t think it was necessary for other users to see. If they wanted those users updates they could just ask them to be a friend and it would be on their custom feed.

Posting these questions and comments is really good for the other adocu users. If you’re having these problems odds are a lot of other people are too.

    Thank you,
    Jonathan

I would like the posts to be stamped with the day’s DATE instead of “2 days ago”, “3 days ago”. Especially on posts older than a week or so.

    Thanks.

  22. 22 admin

@KJ Since adocu has only been up for a few days you haven’t been able to see what it looks like after a week. It does indeed show the date after a week has gone by.

  23. 23 KJ

Cool…thanks. I was thinking about using it for an alternate use.

  24. 24 Matt

@Admin its not that this could be a “twitter clone” But something new, Something like twitter, something beyond twitter, like video enabled messages. With spaces. :p

  25. 25 Daidaros

I just want some way to add you in my IM system, like Gtalk :)

  26. 26 jansegers

    CamelCaseSupport would add CamelCaseComplexity

  27. 27 teranex

    Hi,

In the RSS for a user (by example http://adocu.com/teranex/feed.rss, you always use the user’s profile page as the GUID. this is wrong (it should be a unique value for every item, and prevents (some?) feed readers from ’seeing’ more then one item. By example in Gregarius it only displays the first item, which is imported and doesn’t import any other item anymore since it think’s it is the same item (because the guid is the same). Could this be fixed?

    thx!

  28. 28 Frank

There seems to a problem with the “friends rss”: i see lots of people in there I don’t know!

  29. 29 admin

@teranex & @frank I fixed the friends RSS and the GUID. Let me know if there’s still a problem.

    Thanks!,
    Jonathan

    Jonathan: works. thanks

  31. 31 Kare Anderson

    thanks for your candor

  32. 32 Carla

Works great for me, thanks! Forces me to be concise about whatever I want to say. Almost like poetry. Anyway, the only thing I would be missing is a widget to put on my Netvibes page so I can publish from there. Thank you!
